Amazon Launches Ultrafast 30-Minute Delivery Service
Amazon is rolling out a new ultrafast delivery service called 'Amazon Now' that promises to fulfill urgent customer needs in 30 minutes or less for an additional fee. The service first launched in India last June and is now expanding to dozens of U.S. and foreign cities.
More than 20 years after redefining fast shipping, Amazon (ticker: AMZN) is preparing to raise the bar again by offering to fulfill customers' most urgent product needs in half an hour or less for an extra fee.
The Service: Amazon Now
The ultrafast service, called Amazon Now, first launched in India last June. The company is rapidly opening small order-processing hubs in dozens of U.S. and foreign cities to cater to shoppers who cannot or do not want to wait for cough medicine to relieve flu symptoms or tomatoes for tonight's dinner salad.
Pricing and Availability
Amazon has not yet disclosed full pricing details or the list of covered cities, but the service will be available for an extra fee. It is expected to initially be offered to Prime members, similar to other fast-shipping services.
Competition
This move puts Amazon in direct competition with ultrafast delivery services such as Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats, which already offer grocery and essential item delivery within hours or minutes. Traditional retailers like Walmart and Target are also expanding their rapid delivery offerings.
Potential Impact on the Company
The initiative strengthens Amazon's position as a leader in logistics and customer satisfaction. If successful, it could boost customer loyalty and drive more consumers to subscribe to Prime, increasing revenue. However, the operational costs of such a service are high and may pressure profit margins in the short term.
